Most are annual, biennial or perennial herbaceous plants, some are dwarf shrubs or shrubs, and very few vines. The family contains 372 genera and 4060 accepted species. They can be found almost on the entire land surface of the planet. The family namee comes to international scientific vocabulary from New Latin, from "Brassica", the type genus, + "aceae", a standardized suffix for plant family names in modern taxonomy.
