Kroenleinia is a genus that contains a single species, Kroenleinia grusonii, which was originally placed in the genus Echinocactus. Recent phylogenetic studies suggest that it likely resulted from hybridization between Echinocactus and Ferocactus. As a result, Echinocactus grusonii was reclassified into its own genus, resulting in the new species name, Kroenleinia grusonii.
The generic name honors Marcel Kroenlein (1928-1994), director of the famous Jardin Exotique of Monaco from 1969 to 1993.
